Rotarian of the Day . . . Jimmy Ownbey

Jimmie grew up in Spearman, Texas, the son of a farmer/rancher. He spent more time in the saddle and behind a plow than he'd like to remember. Graduating from high school in 1965, he attended two years at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas playing football there one year. Then he transferred to Texas A & M, College Station, Texas where he received a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in 1969 and his doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1972.

Dr. Ownbey moved to Vinita in 1973 with Susan, his high school sweetheart, and their two children Tim and Liz. His third child, Sara arrived in 1982, the only "Okie" of the family. Tim has 2 boys and 2 girls, Liz has 2 boys and Sara has one daughter.

He is most proud of his wife, Susan, teaching math at Bluejacket; his son Tim, a graduate of OSU School of Osteopathic Medicine, board certified in Neurology, living in Albuquerque, NM. His daughter Liz, living in Tulsa, has a B.S. in nursing from OU and a Masters in Business administration. His daughter Sara, who lives in Edmond, has a B.S. from OSU in Microbiology and is a graduate from OSU School of Osteopathic Medicine. Sara is doing her 2nd year of residency in family practice in Oklahoma City.

While in Vinita, Jimmie co-founded Hope Vineyard Church in the mid 80's.

Thoughts as we begin the New Year . . . . .

"Ten Golden Stress Relievers"

Psychologist Ethel Roskies suggests the following guidelines for coping with daily stresses in your life:

  1. Eat your elephant one bite at a time. Break your problems into small pieces to make them easier to tackle.
  2. Be realistic in your expectations. Don't expect to be able to do everything in one day.
  3. Attack problems, not people. Don't blame or try to change others. Try to change yourself and your situation.
  4. Avoid the perfection trap. It's the enemy of accomplishment and impossible to achieve.
  5. Stop rushing, start planning. Modern life is fraught with choices, so learn to prioritize.
  6. Don't waste $10 worth of energy on a $2 problem. Choose your battles wisely to conserve time and energy.
  7. Take regular relaxation breaks over the course of the day. Go for a walk around the office or perform two minutes of deep breathing.
  8. Learn to limit "yes" answers. You don't have to be everything to everyone.
  9. Build pleasure into every day. We all need personal time to do things we enjoy. Get up half an hour early‚ before the kids‚ to exercise, read or take a bath. Start the day off with a positive frame of mind.
  10. Give yourself as much praise and encouragement as you would a valued friend. Stop being so hard on yourself.

December is Family Month . . . .

December is Family Month. It is a time to focus on our families, to involve them in our Rotary service, and to challenge ourselves to do even more for those in need. Because there are so many families and so many children waiting for our help, we, as Rotarians, cannot look away. We will not rest until we Make Dreams Real for every child in every home where there is hunger, sickness, and want. As Rotarians, we can do no less.

Thank You, Linda!

My apology for inadvertently leaving Linda Russell's name off the list of Dictionary helpers! She and Cathy Brumley delivered dictionaries to Welch Elementary!
